Joaquim Verrier, Joel Malkoff and Bobby Cookson saw their dream of performing all over the world stifled by the arrival of the pandemic. It was that moment, when distance and isolation became the norm, that these three acrobats decided to come together and use their skills to create something concrete in this year full of unknowns. Thus, the collective La Quadrature was born.
En Echo focuses upon the dynamic relationship between sound, music and circus through the use of a loop station and live microphone. The microphone records and the loop station repeats, creating an echo. From this simple concept, we searched for sounds to record and amplify using our disciplines which could be combined to create entire songs. After developing a sound-circus vocabulary, we started to modify, transform and manipulate the sounds in conjunction with prerecorded music to make the audio and visual soundtrack of the show. If the juggler doesn’t juggle, the acrobat doesn’t land, or the Cyr wheel doesn’t turn, then the melody won’t exist. This phonic laboratory takes place before your eyes and in your ears. This quest for sound resonance is the through-line of the show. Through this musical pursuit, the show takes us to places sometimes comical, and others poetic. What do you think? What do you hear? Are you ready to be part of the score of En Echo?
